== Rule #11 – Negation == ¬CW If any content word has all its sounds inverted, the result is the ''negation'' of it. To see how to invert the sounds you can look in the ''sound mirror''. {| class="wikitable" |- | colspan="2" align=center | consonants | style="border-top:none;border-bottom:none;border-left:0.05pt solid #000000;border-right:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | colspan="2" align=center | vowels |- | align=right style="" | b p | | c ɟ | style="border-top:none;border-bottom:none;border-left:0.05pt solid #000000;border-right:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | align=right style="" | i | style="border-top:none;" | ɒ |- | align=right style="" | d t | | k g | style="border-top:none;border-bottom:none;border-left:0.05pt solid #000000;border-right:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | align=right style="" | e | style="border-top:none;" | ɔ |- | align=right style="" | ɖ ʈ | | kp<span style="background-color:transparent;"> </span>gb | style="border-top:none;border-bottom:none;border-left:0.05pt solid #000000;border-right:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | align=right style="" | ɛ | style="border-top:none;" | o |- | align=right style="" | z s | | x ɣ | style="border-top:none;border-bottom:none;border-left:0.05pt solid #000000;border-right:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | align=right style="" | æ | style="border-top:none;" | u |- | align=right style="" | m | | ɲ | style="border-top:none;border-bottom:none;border-left:0.05pt solid #000000;border-right:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | align=right style="" | a | style="border-top:none;" | ʉ |- | align=right style="" | n | | ŋ | style="border-top:none;border-bottom:none;border-left:0.05pt solid #000000;border-right:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | align=right style="border:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | style="border:none;padding:0.097cm;" | |- | align=right style="" | -ʋ ʋ | | j -i | style="border-top:none;border-bottom:none;border-left:0.05pt solid #000000;border-right:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | align=right | ə | | ə |- | align=right style="" | l | | ɰ | style="border-top:none;border-bottom:none;border-left:0.05pt solid #000000;border-right:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | align=right style="border:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | style="border:none;padding:0.097cm;" | |- | align=right style="" | -ɻ ɻ | | w -u | style="border-top:none;border-bottom:none;border-left:0.05pt solid #000000;border-right:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | align=right style="border:none;padding:0.097cm;" | | style="border:none;padding:0.097cm;" | |} {| class="wikitable" |- | | ɲɛ̀t. | | “It doesn’t eat it.” | | < ¬mòk. ɲ is like the “ni” in “onion”. æ, the “a” in “cat”. |- | | ɰæ̀tɒ. | | “It doesn’t look at it.”, “It doesn’t see it.” | style="border-top:none;" | < ¬lùki. “ɰ” is like a “g” except the tongue and roof of the mouth don’t touch. |- | | ɣɛ̀ŋ. | | “It doesn’t know it.” | style="border-top:none;" | < ¬zòn |- | | xɛ́ŋ. | | “One who doesn’t know.” | style="border-top:none;" | < ꜛɣɛ̀ŋ |- | | ʋʉ̀ŋ. | | “It’s not a person.”, “It’s not human.” | style="border-top:none;" | < ¬jàn. “ʋ” is like a “b” except the lips don’t touch. |- | | ɟɛ̀ŋ. | | “It’s not good.” | style="border-top:none;" | < ¬bòn |- | | mí li ɲɛ̀t kál. | | “I don’t eat the fish.” | style="border-top:none;" | |- | | gʉ̀ɻ. | | “It doesn’t go it it.”, “It stays.” | style="border-top:none;" | < ¬dàu |- | | mí li gʉ̀ɻ. | | “I don’t go.”, “I’m not going.” | style="border-top:none;" | |- | | ʋʉ́ŋ | | “non-human”, “one that isn’t human” | style="border-top:none;" | < ꜛʋʉ̀ŋ |- | | kʉ́ɻ. | | “One that doesn’t go.”, “A stayer.” | style="border-top:none;" | < ꜛgʉ̀ɻ |} As a result, denying something doesn’t have to involve mentioning it. Instead, you use a different, complementary word. For verbs, this mechanism works the same as the “ala” modifier in Toki Pona. For nouns, it works differently, referring to some thing or things that don’t do the original verb, rather than negating the whole sentence. Using “àle”, you can make sweeping negations. {| class="wikitable" |- | | àle. | | “It’s all of them.”, “It everything.” | | < tok ''ale'', cf. en ''all'' |- | | ále. | | “Every one.”, “Everything.” | style="border-top:none;" | < ◁àle |- | | ján àle. | | “Everyone.” | style="border-top:none;" | |- | | táu àle. | | “Every traveller.” | style="border-top:none;" | |- | | dàu ále. | | “It goes everywhere.” | style="border-top:none;" | |- | | mí li ɲɛ̀t e kál àle. | | “I don’t eat any fish.”, “I don’t eat fish.” | style="border-top:none;" | |- | | mí li ɰæ̀tɒ. | | “I don’t see it.” | style="border-top:none;" | |- | | mí li ɰæ̀tɒ-ále. | | “I don’t see anything.”, “I’m blind.”, “I’m not looking at anything.” | style="border-top:none;" | |- | | ján àle li ɰæ̀tɒ. | | “No-one sees it.” | style="border-top:none;" | |- | | ʋʉ́ŋ li lùki. | | “Something that’s not human sees it.” | style="border-top:none;" | |}
